Its also the gemstone used to celebrate the 19th wedding anniversary. It’s name comes from the Latin for seawater. this is not just because of it’s colour, but because it was said to calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea. The best Aquamarines combine high clarity with limpid transparency. It shines over an extraordinarily beautiful range of blue to green colours. Because it occurs in large crystals it inspires creative gemstone designers to create new artistic cuts again and again. It’s hardness makes it very tough and protects it to a large extent from scratches.

It is as popular as the classics: ruby, sapphire and emerald. The more intense the colour of an aquamarine, the more value is put on it. We look out for large cabochons of good colour with attractive inclusions that are often “moonstone like.” We incorporate them in to creative hammer worked pieces. Aquamarine makes a lovely companion stone when matched with another gemstone of similar tone. Our current favourite is to mix it with teal sapphires to bring out the green in the aquamarine.
