Rose Cut Diamond Jewellery

Rose cut diamond jewellery has risen in popularity over the last few years. They are prized for their understated charm that is both feminine and unusual. Their flat shape gives them a larger surface area. This means that, not only can you often have a larger diamond for your budget, you can also use them in flatter designs that sit snugly against the finger. Both pretty and practical!

What is rose cut diamond jewellery?

Rose cut diamonds are cut by hand with a flat base and most commonly 24 triangular facets on a gently domed top. The name comes from the arrangements of the facets which is said to resemble the overlapping petals of a rose bud. This antique diamond cut originated in the 1500’s and became particularly fashionable in the Georgian and Victorian eras. The large, wide facets are designed to catch the light in the low light conditions of candlelight.

With the invention of modern cutting techniques rose cut diamonds fell out of favour. By contrast to the 24 facets of a rose cut, the modern round brilliant cut has 57-58 facets. Whilst a rose cut will sparkle due to the light reflecting on the surface facets of the stone, brilliant cuts reflect light internally as well. An ‘ideal cut’ brilliant diamond has the perfect arrangement of facets for light to enter the stone, be internally reflected and exit the stone through the table (top surface). This is what causes the diamond to sparkle or ‘shine’.

In addition to the traditional single rose cut with a flat base, rose cut diamonds can also be faceted underneath. This is known as a double rose cut diamond. Rose cuts also aren’t necessarily round. Antique diamond are often not perfectly round due to being hand-cut. Modern rose cut diamonds are often deliberately cut in unusual irregular shapes to maximise their uniqueness. These are the stones that we love to work with.

Their hand-cut uniqueness gives each rose cut diamond its own character. This organic charm, coupled with their flatter shape, makes them perfect for our rough diamond collection. Each setting in our rough collection is individually handmade to fit the stone. This makes each ring one of a kind!

Design Your Own Engagement Ring

There are now many website offering a service where you can design your own engagement ring. Mostly this involves picking a diamond at the price you want to pay and then selecting from a limited number of precast metalwork shanks in the metal of your choice and having the diamond mounted in it. At Pruden and Smith the process is a little different as we start with the design of the ring and then select the materials to best reflect what you are trying to achieve “the ring that your fiancee will love designed especially for them”.

A design appointment is free of charge

Book a design appointment with one of our designers Rebecca Smith or Suzy Dunford-Gent.

What to think about and bring to your design appointment

What jewellery does your fiancee wear all the time?

What jewellery do they comment on or covet?

Whats their jewellery style? Vintage, classic, modern, fine, chunky, organic, geometric, colourful, art deco.

What colour metal do they like?

Take a look on our website or search in google images and pick out the rings that come closest to how you imagine you would like your ring to look.

An idea of your budget to the nearest £500

During your engagement ring appointment

We will do some sketches putting together all these requirements to come up with ring that truly reflects your finances style and agree a budget for the ring. We will often also look at diamond samples and the colour of different metals and gemstones so that you know exactly what you are buying. For example: did you know that most rings bought on the High St are rhodium plated which masks the true colour of the metal? This is temporary and can be worrying as the metal begins to change colour as the plating wears off if you were not aware of it.

After your appointment

Sometimes during the design appointment we are not able to get to the point where you feel you can order, perhaps you want time to think about what was discussed. In this case we will make a computer render in colour for you or order in different gemstones and diamonds for you to make your final selection. In some cases we will make the ring up in silver and cubic zirconia, especially if the ring is very different from anything in our current collection.

From computer render to handmade finished ring, see more https://prelive.prudenandsmith.com/shop/rings/engagement-rings/

Giving the go ahead

Once a design has been decided upon then a 50% deposit is payable with the balance due on collection. We will agree your delivery date at the time your deposit is placed. Please remember to give as much time as possible as handmade rings require a little time for materials to be ordered, to be made up, to go a way to be hallmarked and then to be set and possibly engraved. 4 weeks is the ideal minimum time for this, though we can push things through faster if required.

Diamond Myths Exposed!

There are many myths out there about diamonds. To dispel them, we are happy to share with you some professional truths!

  • ‘Carat’ only refers to weight: 1ct=0.2gm. For example, these earrings of ours have a total carat weight of 2ct which is equal to 0.4gms.Moi Et Toi Diamond Earrings 2ct
  • The ‘sparkle’comes from light entering the top (‘table’) and bouncing or refracting out again, NOT from the back or sides. This is one reason why we favour ‘rub-over’ settings such as this ring:

Engagement ring set, Wedding & Eternity Fitted Platinum Inverse Spiky Rings

  • There is no real point in having an internally flawless or colourless diamond. Only the most discerning professional eye can distinguish these from  ‘G’ colour with very small inclusions (‘VVS’)
  • Work out your budget. Contrary to popular belief your fiancee would not wish you to suffer hardship! The rule about 3 times your monthly salary is a pretty good one.
  • Divide out design from value. We pride ourselves on our strong designs. So often we see very expensive diamonds set in awful settings. The ‘metal-work’ is only likely to be £1-£2K and you can trust us to set your stones in real beauty. See how to commission HERE

Rough Stone Jewellery

Rough stone jewellery is growing in popularity, we are certainly increasing selling products with rough cut diamonds in them. Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man and takes it’s name from the ancient Greek word “adamas” meaning the “unconquerable”. So, if you think a rough cut diamond won’t be as strong – think again! Rough cut diamond rings are seeming to be a new and unusual choice. A rough cut diamond is cheaper to purchase than a specified cut diamond. Often the design of a rough cut diamond will enhance the beauty of the imperfect stone. For example, a rough stone looks beautiful with a rough hammered finish metal. Examples of our rough diamond products are pictured below.

Platinum Engagement Rings – New Stock

At Pruden and Smith jewellers in East Sussex we have been busy! Phew, it’s lucky it’s nearly Christmas – we have been so busy designing and creating new jewellery designs for platinum engagement rings, using only top quality diamonds and where the designs are more unusual we have been ensuring there is a stunning wedding ring to match.

Take a look at our pick of the week!

The first of our platinum engagement rings we want to showcase is the really quite lovely round brilliant cut diamond platinum engagement ring.

The platinum has been designed to twist around the beautiful 0.5ct diamond, making it a beautiful and unusual style for an engagement ring, with a clear cut diamond to enhance the simplicity of this engagement ring.

Or perhaps you would like one of our highly glossed and princess cut diamond platinum engagement rings with fitted wedding band? We have polished the platinum so it is almost as shiny as the beautiful diamond itself!

Then we have taken the wedding ring and fitted it exactly to the engagement ring. This makes an incredible set to own, but don’t worry, if you would like a wedding ring for your partner to complement this set then we can provide that as well!

From the range we have recently created, we had to chat about another of our princess cut diamond platinum engagement rings. This is a real favourite, with a 0.5ct  diamond and is another twisted platinum engagement ring.

We have created a few different designs as these are proving really popular! we also have many wedding rings that complement these engagement rings – so don’t worry about choosing an unusual style.

Take a look through some of our other platinum engagement rings – we have plenty for you to look at, some have been designed using old diamonds, which is something we love to do. Some have been commissioned specially, but many are just designs that we love!

Please give us a call if you would like to make an enquiry – 01273 846338. We look forward to hearing from you…
