Christmas Jewellery Commissions Reusing Gemstones

Christmas jewellery commissions reusing gemstones are an exciting and ethical way to treat a loved one to a beautiful new piece of bespoke jewellery. Do you have old jewellery at home containing small diamonds and semi-precious stones? Or perhaps a collection of small, mismatched stones leftover from a previous commission that used up the larger stones? These small gemstones might not look like much individually but with a little creativity they can be used to create something spectacular.

Christmas Jewellery Commissions Reusing Gemstones: What to consider

Reusing Small Mismatched Diamonds

We often find that people have a series of small diamonds leftover after redesigning old jewellery. At first you might not know what to do with them. They may be very small or perhaps all different mismatched sizes. These types of stones can be perfect for creating a diamond scatter pattern or for use in an organic jewellery design that has a rough hammered texture, or natural flowing lines. Many of our designs can be adapted to take any number of stones so you don’t have to worry about wasting any.

Reusing Old Cut Gemstones

You may notice that some old gemstones are cut differently to modern gemstones. Old cut diamonds, or old mine cut diamonds, were individually cut by hand and so each one is unique. This means that they are not always suitable for a very regular, symmetrical design but are perfect for a beautiful organic jewellery design that utilises their individuality.

Reusing Unusual Shaped Stones

Does your collection include unusual gemstone cuts, such as emerald cut gemstones, pear-shaped gemstones, or princess cut gemstones? These gemstone shapes stand out as very different amongst a collection of small round diamonds. A great way to incorporate these unusual gemstones is to make them the centre piece of the design. Using what makes them different to your advantage can result in a truly striking take on a more classic design.

Mixing Colours

A common question when redesigning old jewellery is which stones to put together and what to leave out. There are a number of ways to approach colour. One approach is to go for a monochrome look. Keeping a design to just one colour, such as all diamond, can put the focus of the design on the metalwork or the pattern of the stones. Another option is to keep your colour palette to similar tones or shades of the same colour, for example putting blues and greens together. Contrasting colours also work really well together, and bright primary colours can be used to create a truly striking effect. One final thing to remember is that diamonds go with everything! So, if in doubt, mix some diamonds with one other colour and the results are guaranteed to be fabulous.

Where to start…

The first place to start is the jewellery box, safe or boxes under the bed. Take a look through your existing jewellery collection and think about what you wear and don’t wear. Which stones do you love on their own, and which small stones would you like to use up somehow but need ideas for? The second question to ask yourself is what you want to achieve, are you looking for something for yourself, your partner, a friend or your children. Perhaps you want to commission a matching set, or a set of rings that with eventually be handed down to the next generation. Once you’ve had a think about what you want, check out our handy design ideas pages for inspiration:

Online Jewellery Design Consultations: Redesign Your Old Jewellery

Why redesign your old jewellery? If you look in your jewellery box or safe, they are likely to contain many treasured pieces of jewellery that hold special significance. Perhaps they remind you of a special memory so you wouldn’t dream of parting with them, but they are broken, don’t fit or are not your taste so they remain unworn. If this sounds familiar, redesigning your old jewellery is a fun and creative process that could be perfect for you. Recycling your old gemstones or precious metals can also be more economical and ethical because we don’t have to source new materials.

In a process we’ve named “A precious legacy”, we offer you the opportunity to review your entire jewellery collection. Firstly, we offer a free overview of all your items where we discuss each item’s sentimental value, financial value and whether you like to wear it as it is. Next, we assess the items that you do not wear by testing the metal they are made from, then we catalogue the sizes and shapes of any stones you may want to reuse.

Online Jewellery Design Consultations: Jewellery Remodelling

Once this inventory is complete, we can begin to discuss what you would like to achieve from the process. If you have a number of items, we may present you with a series of designs that we can make in one go or over a longer period of time to help spread the cost (and the excitement!). Any precious metals (but not stones) that are leftover, can’t be used or hold no sentimental value can be scrapped with us and offset against the cost of the new item.

How Online Jewellery Design Consultations Work

We offer both online and phone consultations. Our online design consultations are held via video chat where you have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and requirements. Your design appointment will be with Rebecca Smith our Creative Director. She will produce sketches and costings after the appointment. If you are providing some of your own materials to be incorporated, an inventory along with an estimated value will be worked out – subject to future testing. Once this information has been compiled you will be provided with a Quote containing your designs, inventory, and pricing options. When you are ready to proceed with your chosen design(s), your bespoke jewellery will be handmade in-house by our skilled team in our Ditchling Workshops.

‘Get Creative’ Design your own Jewellery

From Imagination to Creation

We have launched a new campaign called ‘Get Creative’ showing how, with our help, you can design and create your very own one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery. So if you have ever envisaged such a thing and want to bring it to life, get in touch with us here at Pruden and Smith.

How the process works?

The first step is to call us at Pruden and Smith and book an appointment with one of our professional designers. We then will ask you to gather any information such as design, patterns or textures that will help explain your design.

Your appointment:

Upon arrival you will be met with our gallery staff where you’ll be introduced to our business, from our heritage to the newest designs to the jewellers themselves. You’ll also be introduced to your designer, where discussion of your design begins. However you like to present your ideas, whether it’s drawing, talking or dancing we welcome it! We also have a selection of gemstones and, of course, plenty of finished jewellery if you need further imaginative help.

When there is a solid understanding about what it is you would like, our designers will apply the technicalities to the design. This includes how we will construct your piece of jewellery and how it will stand the test of time.

Once every detail is discussed and you are happy, over the next week or so (depending on how quick you would like it) we send you a quote with a final drawing/photo of your design and the total price.

At this point we welcome any changes or modifications to be done to your design so we can get it exactly right. You can either call us or make another appointment.

Going ahead:

When this is finalised, we ask for a 50% deposit to go ahead with the making your design. We work to an estimated date of completion, or if you have deadline, a specific date, usually between two and six weeks later. Sometimes, nearer  the delivery date, we will call you to arrange a date for a fitting or last appointment with your designer.

We guarantee it is a fabulously exciting and creative process!

About Two Circles Design:

Exhibiting since 1990, Mark Ford graduated from his sculpture degree at Sunderland in 1996. As a Land Artist he is inspired and informed by the natural world. Growing up immersed in the Sussex Downland, he has developed a strong interest in the archaeology, geography and mystery of the area, also drawing on rural and ancient traditions of willow working, which, in a pre-plastic world was seen as an essential product.

Rebecca Ford, an English and creative writing degree graduate and trained secondary school teacher began working with Mark and in 2004 they formed Two Circles Design. A creative duo making work to commission ranging from distinctive garden design projects, festivals, sculptural installations in galleries and outdoor classrooms for Schools. Their work is flexible and from locally sourced materials. The pieces can be allowed to take root and form permanent living environments,

‘As Land artists making small and large scale structures, we feel that creating ephemeral woven forms is a process of discovery. When we manipulate our own experiences of the universe the potential of using plant forms are metamorphosed by the human hand into a new life form.

It is this transformation that makes the work so powerfully alluring. The unusual forms surprise and challenge, yet the origin of the work is always present, the fact that the materials are plant based, pulses through every form.

windfall-postcard-jpg-opt413x288o00s413x288

Having restored local ‘over-stood’ willow stools back into rotation for harvesting themselves, through to the physical demands of manipulating the material, Mark and Rebecca Ford’s work reflects a renewed interest in returning to a slower pace of life, to the art of making something that takes time and effort to produce. The Sculptures final forms take time to evolve, the nature of the material dictating in part, the direction and shape. As the willow criss-crosses and interweaves, it creates fluid lines, drawings on a grand scale, a flowing story that stimulates and exhilarates the senses.

Based in Slindon, within the South Downs National Park, they live in a National Trust cottage with their daughter Florence and a mischievous Jack Russell dog called Fedge. The garden and house are used to experiment and explore new techniques and ideas. Among the gorgeous sculptures, arbours and seats that scatter across their garden, they are experimenting with freeweaving and ‘bendernomics’, an ancient architectural technique adapted to create extensions to country cottages and wedding reception venues. When covered, the structures mould around the woven walls and emanates a pod-like glow when lit up at night, Snug and cosy, yet still rooted in the outdoors, it connects the inside to the out seamlessly.

A fun day learning the techniques in the “woven explorations” workshop run by Two Circles Design.

If you are asking the questions, How to sell gold jewellery? where to sell gold jewellery? How to sell gold jewellery for cash? or who buys gold jewellery?

Here is your answer, because here at Pruden and Smith we buy your scrap gold giving you the best prices around. We also can take any of the other precious metals: silver, gold and platinum that you wish to turn into cash.

We can buy your scrap of gold and other precious metals.

Redesign your old jewellery

Some of your old jewellery will be of sentimental value so instead of getting money for your old gold we redesign it for you. In a process called “A precious legacy” we work with you to reuse the precious metal, diamonds and gemstones into a fabulous new set of jewellery that you will love to wear everyday. We offer a free design consultation where your jewellery is assessed for re-use. Metal type is tested, diamonds are tested and we make an inventory of all the materials that mean the most to you or are most valuable. We then make design proposals based on the designs that you like from our collection of how everything can be reused and a budget. You may then proceed with one or all of the pieces that have been proposed. Sometimes there is enough surplus scrap metal to go towards paying for the labour on the making of the jewellery, otherwise you just pay for the labour. the finished pieces are worth much more in both sentimental and financial terms.
