Emerald Birthstone Jewellery with a difference – Rough Emeralds

For something a bit different, take a look at our rough emerald jewellery. Our rough Brazilian emeralds have been carefully cut to preserve the rough texture on the surface of the emerald for a natural organic “found” look. The roughness of the cut of emerald gives an undulating outline to the gold plated silver setting edge which has been textured to match.

Whist creating beautiful classically traditional rings we also love to design and make contemporary rings. We love this unusual emerald engagement ring and diamond wedding band made for a client last year. It features a one carat round emerald set in 18ct yellow gold with a rounded end platinum shank. These rings have featured round and oval emeralds however we often think of an emerald as being an “emerald cut” gemstone. The emerald cut was developed especially for emeralds as when they are cut square their structure means the corners are prove to chipping off easily so the octagonal emerald cut made practical sense to gem cutters. We usually set the emerald in yellow gold as it strengthens the richness of the green of the emerald as you can see in this ring and the one below. Using white metals for the setting brings out the blue of the green more, making it cooler on colour tone. Its very individual which colour is preferred. You can compare the colour effects in the two rings just handmade as bespoke commissions in our workshop below:

Green Jewellery – Green Gemstones

The colour green is know to have a calming effect and is said to be associated with health, harmony, well-being, safety and fertility. Green jewellery is perfect for this time of year because it fits in just as well with both your summer and autumn wardrobes. There are lots of green gemstones to choose from, including: emerald, green tourmaline, peridot, tsavorite, green sapphire, jade and malachite. We have picked three of our favourites below: emerald jewelleryperidot jewellery and green tourmaline jewellery.

Emerald Jewellery

Emerald is the traditional birthstone for May and in some cultures is believed to symbolise good luck and true love. Emeralds are prized for their unique colour and even have a specific cut named after them, the ‘Emerald Cut’, which helps enhance the richness of coloured gemstones such as emerald. Emerald jewellery is a great option for those wishing to add colour to a really special design and they work really well with diamonds.

Peridot Jewellery

Peridot, the birthstone for August, is a very old gemstone and can be found in Egyptian jewellery from the early 2nd millennium B.C. The vibrant green is evocative of new buds in the springtime and so peridot jewellery is the perfect stone to liven up an outfit in the darker months when we are craving colour. Partner peridot with gold for a rich warm look or with silver for a fresher look.

Green Tourmaline Jewellery

Tourmaline comes in a wide range of vibrant colours, from yellow to honey, baby pink to red “rubalite”, sea blue to green.  For this reason, green tourmaline is available in a multitude of different shades of green, from translucent fern green to dark forest green. This diversity is what give the stone its unique character and also means that green tourmaline jewellery is a great choice if you are trying to match a specific item of clothing.

How to wear green jewellery

Green jewellery can be partnered with harmonising colours such as yellow or blue for a subtler look, or with contrasting colours such as pink or purple if you want to create more of an impact. Emeralds look stunning with diamonds, sapphires and rubies for a truly precious look. Green tourmaline naturally works well with the other shades of tourmaline including pink and yellow. The vibrancy of peridot means it works really well with lots of other stones but particularly with contrasting stones such as amethyst.
