Men’s Wedding Bands Style Guide

Our Men’s Wedding Bands Style Guide covers everything you need to know about choosing the perfect ring.

A good place to start if you are looking for a plain wedding band is to think about the cross-section, or ‘profile’, of the ring. The most classic style is the court wedding band, this has a curved outer surface as well as a curved inner surface for comfort. An alternative to the traditional court shape is what we call a low court wedding band, this has a slightly softer curve on the outside of the ring, this style is popular with people who aren’t used to wearing rings because it is quite subtle. A more modern wedding ring is a the flat wedding ring. Flat wedding rings can be flat on the inside as well as outside, but generally we make them with a curved inside known as a ‘comfort-fit’.

Texture

Hammered wedding bands are a popular choice with people looking to add a little extra detail to a simple band. Adding texture is also a great option for people who work with their hands a lot. Small dings and scratches are part of the normal life of a wedding ring and add to it’s character over the years, however people with very hands-on jobs may wish to choose a style that helps these marks less noticeable. We offer three hammering styles, peened, hammered, and rough hammered. All of these hammering styles can be applied to almost any plain band. We also offer a reticulated finish which has a heavier more organic looking texture, this texture is applied in a different way and can’t be applied to all ring shapes but we do have a large selection to choose from.

Form

In addition to the standard ring profiles we also offer some more unusual styles including our twisted wedding rings, wonderful organic looking side-hammered bands, and our slash wedding band.

Colour

Why not add a bit of colour! Our wedding bands are handmade to order in a selection of metals including yellow gold, rose gold and platinum. For something a little more unique we can also combine metals for a two-tone or tri-colour effect.

Engraving

Engraving is a classic way to personalise your wedding ring. We worked with talented hand-engravers who can engrave anything from lettering to a pattern, as well as monograms and family crests.

Cliq Fit Hinged Rings for Engagements and Weddings

Cliq Fit Hinged Rings are the perfect answer if your knuckles are larger than your finger base. Traditional rings have to be large enough to pass over the knuckle. Without Cliq technology, rings are sized for the largest part of your finger, rather than the base, where it is actually worn. That’s why on some finger shapes most rings will twist and turn. Cliq technology eliminates the problem by opening and closing around the base of your finger, in the perfect position.

The Cliq fit technology can be fitted to many Pruden and Smith engagement, trilogy or dress ring designs in 18ct gold or platinum. They are also available in a wide range of wedding bands in 14ct, 18ct golds in white, rose or yellow or platinum. The band width must be a minimum of 3mm wide and 2mm thick.

bespoke hinged engagement rings

Cliq’s hinge and latch design is virtually invisible and snag-free- an exquisite combination of micro-engineering and a jeweler’s design artistry. Cliq adds the ability to open and close, but won’t sacrifice the smooth look and feel of precious metal and will blend seamlessly into any design.

You’ll hear it. That comforting “click” that tells you your ring is securely closed. To activate the mechanism, simply press the “dimple” with the precision stylus. Cliq is designed for ease of use and without snagging your clothing, catching on your hosiery or chipping your nails. Durable enough for everyday use, The Cliq hinge comes with a five-year guarantee.

The CLIQ stylus is designed to open CLIQ rings and features a resin tip to eliminate scratching and abrading of precious metals. Opposite the stylus is a convenient pen. It is 11.5 CM long

Eternity Rings To Enhance Your Engagement and Wedding Ring Set

Ever thought about looking at Eternity Rings To Enhance Your Engagement and Wedding Ring Set? If there’s room on your finger then it is traditional after 10 year of marriage to purchase an eternity ring that sits below the wedding ring on your finger with the engagement ring above. The wedding ring sits between the two. Preventing wear and tear on the more delicate stone set rings as they inevitably rub together during wearing. In modern times the eternity ring is often purchased before the 10 year anniversary on the birth of the first child.

Eternity Rings To Enhance Your Engagement and Wedding Ring SetGetting married on a tight budget in your twenties may mean that your engagement ring, whilst you’d never swap it for all the sentimental value that is has, may not quite suit your tastes or ambitions anymore. Supplementing your engagement ring and wedding ring set with a carefully designed eternity ring can really bring them to life. At P&S we can also redesign your set of rings at the point that you decide to commission an eternity ring. Often we take the original diamond from a clients engagement ring and use it as a side stone in a trilogy or three diamond engagement ring. Mirroring it on either side of a new larger diamond. It is well worth considering if you want to do this before deciding on the design of your eternity ring.

Sometimes you just couldn’t afford or find the right engagement ring for you. As your family has grown then other expenditures became more of a priority. You come to a point in your relationship where you want to renew your vows and an engagement ring just doesn’t fit the bill. Try commissioning a bespoke ring that really expresses who your are. That every time you look at it on your hand it will bring you joy and pleasure reminding you of how valued your and your partner are in your relationship. Really it can be anything at this stage! Here are some great designs that we have handmade for clients this year!

Ditchling Wedding? Plan the perfect Sussex Wedding

Whether you’ve bought the ring or just said yes, planning a perfect Ditchling wedding is no laughing matter. So, what happens next? Depending on you this could involve months of intricate planning or a quick nip to the registry office.  But, regardless of whether you’re a ‘bridezilla’ or a ‘not that fussed’, Ditchling is a perfect place to hold a wedding!

The picturesque village in the East Sussex countryside has a rich and vibrant history, stretching back to the Saxon times with a variety of old buildings and traditional architecture. It also boasts a longstanding reputation as a hub of arts and culture and with the incredible surrounding countryside of rolling hills and stunning wildlife it is easy to see why.

So, when it comes to planning a wedding, it’s obvious why someone would pick Ditchling. It’s the perfect place for a fairy tale wedding and, of course, the photos are going to be fantastic., Whether you’re a local looking for some inspiration or someone who’s just fallen in love with Ditchling’s rustic charm, these are some of our recommendations. If you’re looking for a place to stay, or can’t quite decide on a florist, we’ve got you covered.

Take a look here for more really inspiring wedding venues available in East Sussex

Ditchling Wedding

Ditchling Wedding Venues: First things first: the venue. Ditchling has a variety of incredible venues where you might like to hold your wedding, reception or meal, no matter whether you’re looking for something inside the village or only a short drive away.

For the couple looking to take advantage of Ditchling’s incredible architecture The Bull Pub  is a great choice. One of the oldest buildings in the village the pub dates back to the 16th century, with aged wooden beams and old-fashioned fireplaces. The pub gives off a cosy atmosphere perfect for an intimate family Ditchling wedding and for a summer celebration, it boasts a large garden with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside.

For those of you with more eclectic taste, why not take advantage of the village’s cultural background at Ditchling’s Museum of Arts and Crafts The museum features work made in the village itself and is available for private hire after closing hours. Their café serves a mixture of locally sourced cakes and all of their furniture and crockery has been made in the UK to further celebrate local crafts.

Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft

Décor: Once you know the where, you need to decide on the what. Namely, what is your venue going to look like? I imagine most of you have your wedding theme and colours picked out before you choose the venue –– but how can you be certain that your venue fits your theme? Florists are always a good choice; while they’re providing you with that all-important bouquet why not also enquire about incredible centrepieces, stunning aisle decorations and breath-taking floral arches?

Poison Ivy Florists is a great option for your Ditchling wedding florist. The Ditchling based florist has a local reputation for providing excellent wedding flowers. Their skills extend across a whole range of artistic floristry, creating incredible bouquets, table decorations, buttonholes and centrepieces in styles that vary from strictly traditional to wildly contemporary. They’re great at catering to out-of-towners as well as they are happy to arrange long-distance consultations.

Catering: Once you’ve picked out the wedding venue and sorted the decorations, then it’s time to start planning more important things; the reception. Once you’ve brought your assorted friends and family down to Ditchling, what are you going to feed them? Jesus may have been able to feed the 5000 with only fish and bread but I imagine your guests will be hoping for a little more variety.

For some truly high-end catering why not check out the local experts? Jessica De Jong founded Bear Claw caterers after completing her Cordon Bleu training and working alongside such household names as Jamie Oliver and Michael Roux Jr. Another local legend is Kate Henry, star of Bake-Off 2014. Having taken a year out of baking to get her chef’s qualifications he now specialises in creating delicious canapes for up to 100 guests.

Of course, no celebration is complete without drinks so it’s always a good idea to check out your local options. Some venues, like The Bull Pub, have their booze sorted already. The Bull established their own brewery in 2015 and began making a name for themselves for eco-friendly brewing.

If you’re looking for something sparkly for the toasts, Ditchling is home to one of England’s few vineries. The chalky ground of the South Downs and the cooler climate create the ideal conditions for producing sparkling wines and the Ridgeview vinery is the only one in England with a bespoke sparkling wine cellar – providing original creations to Waitrose, Marks and Spencer’s and Laithwaite’s.

Sussex Wedding

Accommodation: Once the booze has run dry, nibbles have been appreciatively devoured, and the evening is winding to a close you’ll start to think longingly of your bed.

Ditchling boasts a variety of small hotels, bed and breakfasts, holiday homes and local inns and, of course, if your party’s a bit large or you booked late there’s always the possibility of calling a cab and taking advantage of the 20-minute drive to Brighton. If you don’t want the magic of your night to end though, why not check out Blackberry wood campsite  Ideal for the couple looking for something a bit different in a bridal suite and superb for any of your guests with kids, Blackberry Woods offers a unique glamping experience.

The site offers a variety of bizarre accommodation from a refurbished helicopter to a double decker bus. The highlight of the site though are their two treehouses, Higgledy and Piggledy. The two have a rustic charm, taking advantage of the local aesthetic. While they may be rustic, they are certainly not plain. Higgledy comes with a charming tower and a lovely bay window seat with a fantastic view. Piggledy offers a rustic charm, delicate carvings and an elegant heart shaped stained-glass window. So whichever one you pick you are guaranteed to wake up the morning after your wedding and feel like you’ve stepped out of fairy tale.

Hammered Wedding Rings Handmade in Sussex

Hammered Wedding Rings add a touch of individuality to any shaped wedding band. As Jewellers Anton Pruden and Rebecca Smith were both trained as silversmiths originally. The unusual look of the jewellery that they design at Pruden and Smith uses hammering as a technique little used in traditional jewellery. It gives their jewellery an individuality not seen in the High Street. In their Sussex based workshops they have well over two hundred different hammers, each with it’s own unique purpose. The wooden mallet pictured is used for doming out a disc or strip of precious metal such as a hammered cuff bangle. It is a little large for working on a ring. The smaller hammer has a broad face and is use to hammer a slender shaped piece of steel (a chasing tool) that is used to “sketch” a design onto a ring, similar to engraving except that no metal is removed. the small rounded ball at the other end is used to produce a small round dense hammered effect called “peening”. The rings pictured below all use different types of hammering. Visit the Pruden and Smith gallery and Workshops for a workshop tour and see the hammeres in action. they are based in the centre of Ditchling between Brighton, Lewes, Hassocks, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

Bespoke Engagement Rings

Bespoke engagement rings handmade in Ditchling Sussex. Pruden and Smith combine the best in craft skills with design excellence. Choose your diamond size and shape to fit your budget then have a contemporary or traditional ring designed to display it.

Bespoke engagement rings and wedding bands

A platinum “flat twist” 0.5ct diamond engagement ring with made to fit wedding band £4400

Choosing your diamond can be confusing. There are many certifying bodies for diamonds and the colour and clarity grades that they award to the diamonds they grade are not comparable across the board. This means you can appear to have found a bargain yet when you receive the diamond it is disappointing. At Pruden and Smith we can guide you though the buying process. By explaining the colour grades and clarity grades to you and demonstrating the difference in the grading of the different certifying bodies you can make an informed choice about what diamond you are buying. As a naturally occurring gemstone each diamond has it’s own unique inclusions and shape. Some of these can detract from a diamonds brilliance depending on their position within the diamond, yet you pay no more for either. The polish and symmetry of the cutting is also an aspect that you pay no more for. We can advise you on all of these crucial aspects to diamond buying.

bespoke platinum engagement rings and made to fit wedding rings

1ct diamond and platinum engagement ring with fitted diamond set wedding ring £10,800

We recommend platinum for the setting of your bespoke diamond ring. this is because platinum is way harder and denser than any of the other precious metals. It will keep your diamond safe for many years without any need for attention especially if you are commissioning a claw set engagement ring. If you would like to introduce coloured metals into your ring then 18ct rose gold or 18ct yellow gold are ideal both supplying a rich colour. There are many types of special finish which you can incorporate into your engagement ring design such as the hammered finish below.

Ethical engagement rings: Ethically sourced metals and diamonds are very important to some clients. At Pruden and Smith each item is handmade and they are constantly looking to see how they can be more environmentally friendly and ethical. Mining is of itself damaging so they recycle metals as much as they can. The choice currently is Ecosilver, recycled 18ct white or yellow gold or recycled platinum. If you like yellow gold we can also supply FairTrade 18ct yellow gold. When it comes to the diamond all diamonds in the UK have to comply with the Kimberly process. We use a UK supplier so all our diamonds are traceable back to the mine through them. Here is a critique of the Kimberly Process, not all good but it’s currently all we have as a system. If you have your own older or inherited diamond jewellery then this can be redesigned for you, reusing all the materials. See our “precious legacy service”.

Pruden and Smith use many unusual materials to create truly contemporary engagement rings. This ring utilises an uncut diamond. For anyone not wanting the brilliance of a cut diamond this is a great way to give your engagement ring a different look.

Diamond Wedding Rings Partnership Rings

Our Unique Diamond Wedding Rings Partnership Rings are hand made in our Ditching workshops in Sussex. Working in all precious metals: platinum, 18ct and 9ct gold in white, rose and yellow we can match your wedding ring to your existing engagement ring so that both compliment each other perfectly.

Pruden and Smith Workshop
Hand Made in our Ditchling workshop, Sussex

A wedding band these days can break with tradition and does not need to be just a simple band of precious metal, it can be set with diamonds to give it that extra sparkle. Diamonds are ideal for this because of their hardness. We can also incorporate other coloured gemstones. Aquamarine or pink sapphire make a subtle combination, where sapphire or ruby a more striking contrast.

You could choose to have your wedding ring with diamonds set all the way around the band but we also make them with a 60% or 40% spread: Both appear as a full spread of gemstones from the front. Our designers can suggest what will look best with your existing engagement ring and also make sure that the new ring will not cause any damage or be damaged by your existing ring.

We use several setting styles for our diamond wedding rings partnership rings. A rub-over setting surrounds a stone emphasising it’s shape. Our new collection utilises this effect by mixing different shapes such as an alternating princess cut diamond with a round brilliant cut.

A claw set wedding ring creates a ring that appears to be made of only diamonds or the gemstones that they are mixed with.

Channel setting creates a linear look to the diamonds with a metal edge emphasising this.

Pave setting combines the claw set look with the neatness of the channel setting, ideal if you like the look of a channel set ring but have a claw set engagement ring. Micro setting utilises carved claws like pave setting but leaves no edge to the diamonds more like a claw set wedding ring and is very useful for setting tiny diamonds in very narrow rings.

It is now popular to “flush set” diamonds into a band of your choice. We do this in a number of designs from evenly spaced to scatter generously around the ring using up to one hundred gemstones.

We can combine colours of gold to give a variety if mixed metal patterns. Diamond Wedding rings Partnership rings can be made in any precious metal.
