Aquamarine Engagement Rings

Aquamarine Engagement Rings are an unusual but increasingly popular modern choice. Perfectly matched with diamonds and platinum with a smattering of yellow, rose or even green gold. We design you a unique ring based on your personal style or iconography. From a traditional modern take on the classic cluster or art deco inspired engagement ring, through a simple contemporary classic to the creative and organic.

Art deco inspired rings use the emerald cut or the baguette cut diamond and aquamarine. The rings like the gemstone cut have simple angled lines and clean cuts that give a geometric elegance that is just as fresh today as it was in the 1930’s.

The Edwardians popularised the classic cluster ring. A central aquamarine instead of the traditional sapphire really updates the look that had a resurgence in recent times when Princess Diana’s engagement ring was gifted to Kate Middleton by Prince William on their engagement.

Aquamarine Diamond Spiky Stacking RingsDiamond Aquamarine Moi Et Toi RingUnusual engagement Aquamarine Ring

Contemporary engagement rings can take any form and its important that they express who you and your partner are. in the rings above an aquamarine and a diamond was set into a design based on our inwards spiky engagement ring to symbolise a couples love of astronomy and the study of the planets. The green and white gold aquamarine engagement ring symbolises a couples shared love of the beach and the sea.

As you put together your ideas for an ideal engagement ring to propose with it can be useful to think about the moments that you have shared together and if any of those themes symbolise your relationship for you both. An aspect of this can be used either boldly or subtly to make your ring a unique expression of who you are.

The Ever Popular Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring

The Ever Popular Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring continues to be on trend as a top choice for todays brides. First made popular in the Georgian era the classic look of a central stone surrounded by small diamonds had a resurgence in the 1970’s when Princess Diana’s engagement ring of a large central sapphire surrounded by diamonds captured every brides imagination. When Prince William used it to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010 he ensured it has stayed just as popular in the twenty first century. It allows for far more creativity and skill to go into the designing and making of a ring that is a far cry from the traditional single diamond solitaire in a simple claw setting. Browse all our cluster rings here

The next five rings illustrate the different choices of setting style for your cluster engagement ring.

Pave setting shown in the pear shaped diamond cluster ring allows the diamonds to touch and creates a seamless glittering band using round brilliant cut diamonds. Pave setting leaves a border to the edge of the diamond which protects the diamonds from knocks and wear for longer than the other setting styles. if you want to wear your engagement ring all the time then this is our recommended setting style. The central diamond in this ring is held in by two dagger claws and a V to enhance and protect the tip of the pear shaped diamond. The wedding band for this ring slips underneath the panel and sits up flush to the band of the ring. With cluster rings it is always worth considering how the wedding ring will fit with the main ring as they can sit very wide on the finger if they are not properly considered at the time of making.

Pear Shaped Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring

This trilogy cluster engagement ring was made in three parts  and illustrates how important it is to plan your wedding ring at the same time. With limited space on the finger this cluster ring was designed to split into three parts to solve this. The final combined result looking like a single large ring. The client for this ring wanted to see as little metal on the ring as possible and to keep the bands as narrow as possible. We used the castle setting technique where the diamonds are cut into the metal work leaving only small points to hold the diamonds in place. the central round diamond is held by six dagger claws.

Pear Shaped Diamond Trilogy Engagement Ring SetMade to order Pear Shaped Diamond Trilogy Engagement Ring Set

A similar effect can be seen in the round 3ct emerald cluster engagement ring where we have used fish tail setting. Fish tail setting is an additional decorative technique which we can use when larger diamonds are used for the cluster, ideally over 2.5mm. You can see how the side of the setting has been carved to create the claws to hold the diamonds and creates what’s know as a fish tail pattern. It requires great skill from the diamond setter.

2ct emerald cluster ring

Channel setting is common in cluster rings from the Art deco period where geometric shapes were popular. channel setting is where the diamonds are fed into a pre-cut channel allowing them to touch and form a seamless line. In the princess cut diamond cluster ring below this technique has been used using princess cut diamonds to surround the central diamond and round brilliant cut diamonds in the band. it is most successful using the square diamonds as you have no gaps left once the diamonds are butted up to each other.

Princess Cut Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring

Claw settings can be used on larger diamond surrounds and can create delicate flower shapes to the cluster rings they create. Rings referencing flower themes are not new: The daisy ring was first popular in Edwardian times, it was formed of a small diamond in the centre surrounded by six diamonds of the same size.

emerald diamond cluster engagement ring

It is possible to create a flower like ring using the other setting styles as in this 1.5ct scalloped edge cluster engagement ring. Handmade in platinum combining a rubover edge with pave setting and four dagger claws.

1ct Diamond scalloped Cluster Engagement Ring

The cluster rings below illustrate the setting styles for the centre stone. for rings that are for an active life we always recommend a rub over setting so that the setting edge protects the full girdle of the stone. Where a no metal look is required the girdle of diamonds surrounding the central stone can protect it.

Handmade repurposed Yellow Diamond Cluster ring

The central stone in a cluster engagement ring doesn’t always have to be a diamond. Though we love the large yellow diamond pictured above. This effect was achieved using a yellow sapphire below. Emeralds, aquamarines, sapphires and tanzanites are also popular and unusual centre stones.

Creating such a large statement ring allows the designer and goldsmith to show some skill in the way that the underside of the ring is decorated. From secret diamonds and birthstones that only you can admires to hidden inscriptions and motifs.

Rose Gold Makes A Comeback For Eternity and Engagement Rings

Rose Gold Makes A Comeback For Eternity and Engagement Rings: Rose gold gets it’s colour from the addition of copper to the alloy. Don’t worry! There’s just as much gold in the rings weather you choose 9ct or 18ct. Older golds often look a pale rose colour for the same reason, the modern alloys have a stronger salmon colour. You can see the contrast of colours in the Russian style wedding band below where it is contrasted with white and yellow gold. Of course any of our designs can be made in rose gold as all our work is bespoke and made to order. Here are some examples that we have made recently to inspire you.

Our most popular design this year for eternity and wedding bands has hands down been our “Side Hammered” and “Trap” collections. Ever evolving as each client orders their own favourite version of the theme.

You can choose the width and colours of the bands and the side hammering gives them this organic look. For a wedding band keep them plain. for an eternity ring there’s a perfect gap to “Trap” full of diamonds.

The Russian wedding ring has an unusual rough hammered finish but of course you can have it polished too. Or how about a traditional seal engraved signet ring as a mans wedding ring?

Rose gold is associated with the Victorian Era so our “Vintage Look” collection of Engagement and Wedding Rings is often requested to be made in rose gold. Amethyst is another popular Victorian era gemstone which looks fabulous with rose gold. the Vintage collection makes use of fine beading around the settings to get the look. Pictured left to right are a pave set diamond fitted wedding band, a diamond and rose gold cluster trilogy engagement ring, A Rose gold and diamond solitaire engagement ring with amethyst set leaves with the bridal gift earrings that match it.

Our Moi et Toi rings are ever popular as an engagement ring with their obvious symbolism. We love these to set with and emerald and a diamond and the other with morganite. The peened rose gold cuff bangle is an example of some older gold melted down using our “recycle your old gold into something new” scheme. Its often a surprise what colour the gold turns out, especially if it is a large amount. Alchemy! Sometimes the yellow turns pinkish and at other times the pink turns yellow but its always beautiful and full of family memories. A great way to update old jewellery and create an heirloom piece.

So many gemstones look great in rose gold and here’s another amethyst dress ring example, yum, I do love purple and red together. If you aren’t getting married and just want to commission some fun rose gold jewellery like this ruby and diamond rose gold cuff bangle then do get in touch. Another great use of your old gold is our handmade nugget bracelet pictured here in three colours of gold. “Something Old, something new, something borrowed and some thing blue (a few sapphire beads?)

Dutch Tulip Sapphire Engagement Ring

Designing the Dutch Tulip Sapphire Engagement Ring

This ring is part of our Vintage Engagement Ring Collection which is made up of a series of setting styles and bands that can be interchanged to created a personalised look. For this client, the tulip design of the setting was very significant because tulip it is the national flower of his fiancé’s home country, The Netherlands. Sapphire was also of personal significance so we incorporated both of these elements in the design. The client was presented with a number of design variations to choose from, below you can see a CAD sketch featuring an alternative band style.

Dutch Tulip Sapphire Engagement Ring design

Sapphire is the most popular coloured gemstone for engagement rings. It is the birthstone for September and the traditional gift for a 45th wedding anniversary. As well as blue, sapphire comes in a large variety of other colours, including yellow, orange, green, pink and purple. Sapphires in colours other than blue are called fancy sapphires or particoloured sapphires. In many cultures, sapphires are said to symbolise nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Sapphire is also a very practical stone for everyday wear due to its hardness. It scores 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness which is the second highest rating next to diamond at 10, making them a perfect choice for an unusual engagement ring.

Bespoke Blue John Engagement Ring Commission

This unusual Bespoke Blue John Engagement Ring Commission was designed and handmade in our Ditchling workshops to a client’s own ideas. At his design consultation our client discussed that he wanted to incorporate Blue John and a Yin-Yang symbol in a diamond engagement ring design for his partner. We took him through our engagement ring design samples and discussed all the options. He liked our tulip claw setting so we took that as a starting point for the diamond setting and created the design combining all the elements discussed.

The Rare Gemstone used in our Bespoke Blue John Engagement Ring Commission

Blue John, sometimes called Derbyshire Spar, is a rare form of the semi-precious mineral fluorite, found only at Treak Cliff Hill, near Castleton in Derbyshire Peak District National Park. During the 19th century, it was mined in larger quantities for its ornamental value, it is now only mined on a small scale in two caverns: Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern. There is much debate over the origin of the name. The most commonly held opinion is that it is derived from the French words ‘bleu jaune’, meaning ‘blue yellow’, the main bands of colour in the rock.

We contacted one of the mines to source some rough material to send to our stones cutters, they sent a number of samples so we could choose the exact shades that our client liked.

For the final design, a blue grey and white part of a piece of Blue John was specially cut into the teardrop shapes of half the Chinese Yin-Yang symbol and used to form the shoulders of the ring. They sit either side of a 0.6ct round brilliant cut diamond. The final result is the perfect marriage of personal symbolism, contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship and a unique rare material found only in the UK.

Cliq Fit Hinged Rings for Engagements and Weddings

Cliq Fit Hinged Rings are the perfect answer if your knuckles are larger than your finger base. Traditional rings have to be large enough to pass over the knuckle. Without Cliq technology, rings are sized for the largest part of your finger, rather than the base, where it is actually worn. That’s why on some finger shapes most rings will twist and turn. Cliq technology eliminates the problem by opening and closing around the base of your finger, in the perfect position.

The Cliq fit technology can be fitted to many Pruden and Smith engagement, trilogy or dress ring designs in 18ct gold or platinum. They are also available in a wide range of wedding bands in 14ct, 18ct golds in white, rose or yellow or platinum. The band width must be a minimum of 3mm wide and 2mm thick.

You’ll hear it. That comforting “click” that tells you your ring is securely closed. To activate the mechanism, simply press the “dimple” with the precision stylus. Cliq is designed for ease of use and without snagging your clothing, catching on your hosiery or chipping your nails. Durable enough for everyday use, The Cliq hinge comes with a five-year guarantee.

An Unusual Choice: Emerald Engagement Rings

Emerald engagement rings are in the news today as Boris Johnson announces his engagement. In a visit to the races the engagement ring was revealed for the first time and it is An Unusual Choice: Emerald Engagement Rings are not as popular as the sapphire engagement rings that have been favored by the Royal family but are a stunning alternative along with ruby. These traditional statement engagement rings are all set as cluster rings where a large centre gemstone is surrounded by a frame of smaller diamonds.

Whist creating beautiful classically traditional rings we also love to design and make contemporary rings. We love this unusual emerald engagement ring and diamond wedding band made for a client last year. It features a one carat round emerald set in 18ct yellow gold with a rounded end platinum shank. The 5 mm wide wedding band was channel set with 1ct round brilliant cut diamonds giving a very modern and individual look.

These rings have featured round and oval emeralds however we often think of an emerald as being an “emerald cut” gemstone. The emerald cut was developed especially for emeralds as when they are cut square their structure means the corners are prove to chipping off easily so the octagonal emerald cut made practical sense to gem cutters. We usually set the emerald in yellow gold as it strengthens the richness of the green of the emerald as you can see in this ring and the one below. Using white metals for the setting brings out the blue of the green more, making it cooler on colour tone. Its very individual which colour is preferred. You can compare the colour effects in the two rings just handmade as bespoke commissions in our workshop below:

Engagement Ring Trends – Modern Vintage

In recent years the sleek framed look of our rub over set engagement rings has been softened through the use of beading tools giving rise to our latest Engagement Ring Trends – Modern Vintage. Our journey with this design began with a clients brief: Lacy, fine, floral, decorative were the words we came up with to describe his girlfriends, soon to be fiancee’s taste. This was the rings that inspired many others!

Engagement Ring Trends - Modern Vintage

Once this ring was photographed we started to get requests for personalised versions using the same theme. The beading technique used to give these rings their vintage feel requires an edge to work rather than a flat so all the rings have a trillion shaped shank to accommodate this. A trillion is a triangle with curved sides. Stylistically this makes the ring shank look narrower than it really is.

These are some of our bespoke personalised evolution’s of the engagement ring itself. Changes in stone shape, setting style and gemstone. pictured we have a round brilliant cut diamond, a princess cut champagne diamond and a sapphire. Mostly the rings are handmade in platinum but we also had some rose gold and yellow gold requests.

Keep up with how the Engagement Ring Trends – Modern Vintage is evolving here

Once a look begins to circulate requests quickly come in for other items. Below are a few of the best. From matching wishbone wedding bands, to eternity rings, trilogy rings and special earrings pendants and necklaces.

Beading has been applied to precious metal for thousands of years for decorative and strengthening reasons. It can be seen in celtic and roman 22ct gold jewellery. Beading or “Graining” can be confused with pave setting which is use in the rings below. the grains in pave setting are raised from the metal in order to retain a gemstone or diamond. Beading has a purely decorative function. It was last popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Of course there are many era’s of history that can inspire us today. look out for our Art Deco Collection! All our contemporary classics take a theme from history and take it back to it’s simplest form using heavier weight materials?
