An elaborate cover up for a birthday proposal…

Having inherited some jewellery from his grandmother, George opted to use our redesign service to bring a new lease of life into a family heirloom by creating a bespoke engagement ring for his girlfriend of eight years, Hannah.

George had been searching for the perfect engagement ring but not found what he was looking for. That’s when he came across us here at Pruden and Smith. Inspired by the online Gallery of bespoke items created through our redesign service, he booked a design appointment with our Creative Director, Rebecca Smith and opted to remodel the inherited jewellery from his grandmother – turning it into something special and creating a new family heirloom, whilst maintaining its sentimental value.

George brought his Mum along to the design appointment and they sat at the antique silversmithing bench in our Gallery to discuss their ideas with Rebecca, who created an elegant design featuring a solitaire diamond and a thick band with a twist.

The Cover Up After Collection

When the ring was ready for collection, George had to squeeze in a sneaky trip from Gloucestershire to Sussex whilst also visiting Hannah’s Dad all before she got home from work.

When we asked Hannah if she had suspected anything, she explained that “the cat was nearly let out of the bag, as when George drove to Sussex to get the ring the day before, his mum uploaded a photo of him standing in their kitchen on the family WhatsApp chat!! Then this led to elaborate cover up from George to cover his tracks – including changing his clothes and having family try to throw me off the scent!”. When we heard this part of the story, our team were all incredibly impressed with George’s genius idea of changing clothes to say the least!

Customer Story

The Proposal

George surprised Hannah by proposing on her birthday whilst on a walk with their dog, Marvin, near the Bristol suspension bridge – a significant location for the couple as it was the place George first told Hannah he loved her eight years ago.

Hannah shared that “it felt like us against everything” and the moment was made even more memorable as Marvin jumped on George’s knee at the time, which was perfect as she would have wanted him to be part of it.

Like us, Hannah loves her engagement ring and summarised that getting “a bespoke and detailed ‘one-of-a-kind’ diamond ring that has been made especially for me, with family involved in the process, has been really special”.

We wish George and Hannah a very happy engagement and life together and are grateful to have been part of their beautiful love story.

Thank you for reading – if you have a story to share, please do get in touch with us at: hello@prelive.prudenandsmith.com.

Birth Stones Peridot jewellery Uncategorised

Peridot August Birthstone Jewellery

Peridot is the birthstone for August. Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine. It is one of only two gemstones not formed in the Earth’s crust, but in the molten rock of the upper mantle. It is associated with calm, peace, harmony, and health. This lovely vibrant stone adds a great flash of colour to our favourite peridot August birthstone jewellery designs. It is set off equally well by gold or silver and can be paired with other gemstones such as diamond, aquamarine and topaz for tonal harmony, or amethyst for vibrant contrast! We personally love to mix the warmth of gold and peridot with the calm coolness of diamond and aquamarine. It is a great addition to a coloured cluster ring, or unusual stacking ring. It can even make a lovely eternity ring when paired with diamonds.

Rose Cut Diamond Jewellery

Rose cut diamond jewellery has risen in popularity over the last few years. They are prized for their understated charm that is both feminine and unusual. Their flat shape gives them a larger surface area. This means that, not only can you often have a larger diamond for your budget, you can also use them in flatter designs that sit snugly against the finger. Both pretty and practical!

What is rose cut diamond jewellery?

Rose cut diamonds are cut by hand with a flat base and most commonly 24 triangular facets on a gently domed top. The name comes from the arrangements of the facets which is said to resemble the overlapping petals of a rose bud. This antique diamond cut originated in the 1500’s and became particularly fashionable in the Georgian and Victorian eras. The large, wide facets are designed to catch the light in the low light conditions of candlelight.

With the invention of modern cutting techniques rose cut diamonds fell out of favour. By contrast to the 24 facets of a rose cut, the modern round brilliant cut has 57-58 facets. Whilst a rose cut will sparkle due to the light reflecting on the surface facets of the stone, brilliant cuts reflect light internally as well. An ‘ideal cut’ brilliant diamond has the perfect arrangement of facets for light to enter the stone, be internally reflected and exit the stone through the table (top surface). This is what causes the diamond to sparkle or ‘shine’.

In addition to the traditional single rose cut with a flat base, rose cut diamonds can also be faceted underneath. This is known as a double rose cut diamond. Rose cuts also aren’t necessarily round. Antique diamond are often not perfectly round due to being hand-cut. Modern rose cut diamonds are often deliberately cut in unusual irregular shapes to maximise their uniqueness. These are the stones that we love to work with.

Their hand-cut uniqueness gives each rose cut diamond its own character. This organic charm, coupled with their flatter shape, makes them perfect for our rough diamond collection. Each setting in our rough collection is individually handmade to fit the stone. This makes each ring one of a kind!

Wide Band Rings with Diamonds

This week we are showcasing some of our favourite wide band rings with diamonds. Each ring was designed and handmade in our Ditchling workshop. Wider rings are great for creating something truly eye-catching. Also, there is plenty of space for lots on diamonds!

Wide Band Rings with Diamonds Showcase

Reusing diamonds

Many of our clients come to us with their old jewellery for redesigning. Our bubbles and wave designs are perfect for reusing diamonds of different mismatched sizes. Both our Large Diamond Bubbles Wave Eternity Ring and our Bubbles Platinum Diamond Eternity Ring can be made using new or recycled stones.

Geometric wide band rings with diamonds

Geometric designs can be created using the shape of the diamonds or using lots of small diamonds to create a pattern. This brick design uses baguette diamonds in offset rows. Whereas this black and white diamond wide pave set ring uses small round diamonds to create a diamond pattern.

Chunky Rings Designs

Chunky ring designs such as our side hammered gold rings are another great design is you’re looking to reuse your own sentimental 18ct or 22ct gold. They can also be set with your own recycled diamonds. Alternatively we can source a wonderful selection of stones, including diamonds, sapphires, and rubies.

Floral wide band rings with diamonds

These delicate floral designs are a great choice if you’re looking for wide ring but don’t want it to be too heavy. They are both feminine and eye-catching. Both designs make very popular wedding rings.

Kinetic Rings

Kinetic jewellery is fun, unusual, and sure to become a regular talking point. Russian wedding bands contain three bands all interlinked and can be made from a single metal. Alternatively, we can make them from a mixture or white rose and yellow gold for contrast. Our favourite kinetic design is our spinning eternity ring with baguette diamonds.
